The shapes for this pattern were made with the loose pen tool. The shapes were just thought up out of the blue and with some adjustments this pattern came out

The technique I used for this pattern I found on youtube. this way you get a nice continuous pattern.

You have a square work ball in which you design the pattern. On all sides where shapes stick out you make sure that on the other side it is placed exactly at the same spot over the line. finally illustrator makes a kind of cutting mask of the square and so it is pasted in swatches one after the other and a pattern is created.
